Our Staff

Katrina Newby, Owner

Meet Coach Katrina! Also known to your kiddos as "Coach K": Coach Katrina is the proud owner of Small Wonders Gymnastics. I have two sons, Jonathan and Michael. Jon is a coach at the gym, and has blessed me with a beautiful granddaughter. Michael is a Lieutenant in the US Navy stationed at Oceana in Virginia, and is a Naval Flight Officer. I tell everyone about the extraordinary gift of this gym and my kids. I know the importance of choosing people you can trust your children with, and I'm honored that you place that trust in myself and my staff. God has blessed me with more than I deserve! I love the gift of children, and I feel overwhelmed by the opportunity to work with them. Thanks to my Staff, Small Wonders is growing in ways I could never have imagined!

I began coaching as a teenager at the local YMCA; however, my professional gymnastics coaching experience began in Daytona Beach, FL in 1993. I have been a professional member of USA Gymnastics since 1993 and I opened Small Wonders in April of 1997! I have been Safety Certified since the 1st year it was offered in 2000. I'm a professional member of USAG and NGA, as well as a Meet Director. My certifications include SafeSport, Abuse Prevention, Concussion protocol training, USA Gymnastics Instructor, and the Fundamentals of Gymnastics, School of Competitive Gymnastics: Women's Gymnastics Junior Olympic Team Coach. I graduated with a Certification in Early Childhood Education and completed my education with a certificate in the School of Business. To sum it up: I LOVE my Job!

Coach Jon

Coach Jon has been coaching at Small Wonders since 2008. As the son of Coach Katrina, he began coaching along side her at the age of 13. His coaching at Small Wonders began with the Toddler class, but it didn't take him long to figure out that the Tumbling class was his favorite to teach. Now having been Coaching at Small Wonders for over 16 years, he has worked with and taught every level and age group.

Coach Jon is a safety-certified professional member of NGA with SafeSport Certification, as well as CPR, First Aid and AED Certified through the American Red Cross. He has coached at various camps across the country including Flip Fest (TN), IGC (PA), Woodward (PA), Ball State (IN), Champion Gymnastics (KY), and Houston Gymnastics Academy (TX), and even spent time as the Volunteer Assistant Coach for Ball State Women's Gymnastics (2016-2021, 2023) during which they were Regular Season MAC Conference Champions. Coaching isn't all there is to his gymnastics experience, Coach Jon began doing gymnastics at 16 months old. He achieved scores as high as a 10.0 on vault, however his favorite event was always Floor. Coach Jon tells us that he is currently coaching levels 4-8. As we are getting ready for the 2024/2025 Season, he says he is now most excited about competing at the upcoming LR Productions Meets. Coach Jon's first love is his family: wife Emma, daughter Maeven, and dog Berkeley. In his spare time he enjoys golfing and cooking. He aspires to own and continue to grow Small Wonders Gymnastics.

Coach Makayla

Hi, I’m Coach Makayla! I started coaching at Small Wonders Gymnastics in 2014. Small Wonders has become my official second home over the years—this is where friends have turned into family and my lifelong passion has blossomed!

I’ve been safety certified since I started coaching the Competitive Team in 2015, and have done various trainings and camps as well through the years. During the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, I coached at the biggest international meet for NGA athletes of ALL levels in Puerto Rico. We’ve taken girls to various out of state meets including Nationals in California (2023-24)! I can’t wait to watch Small Wonders continue to grow and have my, soon to be, little one raised in this positive environment!

Coach Jennah

Hi, I’m Coach Jennah, and I have been coaching at Small Wonders Gymnastics since 2020! Before my coaching career, I was a gymnast here for few years as well. I have coached toddlers through level 3, and I am currently one of the level 3 coaches. Something that I love about coaching are the connections you make with the gymnasts and the other coaches. I love coaching and helping the gymnasts understand the physical and mental aspects of this sport!

I am a junior at Wapahani, and, when I’m not in the gym, I enjoy cheering and drag racing. In March of 2024, I cheered at the basketball 2a state game, which was the first time in history we have ever been to state.

I love working in an uplifting environment, and I am excited to see what the future holds for me here at Small Wonders!!

Coach Kaleigh

My name is Kaleigh Carter, and I started coaching at Small Wonders in 2024! I started gymnastics when I was six years old, and competed until I graduated high school.

I helped coach the New Castle High School Trojan Gymnastics Team for two years, until I took a break to have my three children. I have a nine year old son and twin six year old daughters. I am so excited to be back coaching the sport that I have loved for so many years.

In my free time I love to travel, read, and lay by the pool.

Coach Abriel

I started my career as a competitive gymnast at Cole Academy (age 4). After years of competing, I switched to Allstar Cheerleading in middle school, and competed until I graduated..winning two national championships my Senior year! I ended my cheerleading career as a Ball State University Cheerleader.

I have been an Assistant Coach and Choreographer since age 14. When I turned 17, I took over as Head Coach of Muncie Toxic Fusion Cheerleading, and have been there since. Aside from my two National titles as an athlete, I have coached teams to two more National titles! Now, I am and Assistant Coach to my Momma at New Castle Chaos Cheerleading. In 2023-2024, I coached Monro Central Junior and Senior Highschool Cheerleading. Nowadays, I spend my life in a gym between both competitive cheer programs (Muncie and NC), and now coach Recreational Gymnastics, Tumbling, and Level 4 Competitive Gymanstics at Small Wonders! I truly love all the athletes I work with as if they are my own, and I am so excited to see the growth of my athletes and myself throughout this season!

Coach Issy

Hello I'm Coach Issy! I go to New Castle High School. I did gymnastics on the recreational side. I have two brothers and three sisters, all who have coached at Small Wonders as well! During my time at Small Wonders, I have coached Parent/Toddler, Advanced Toddlers, Pre-Team, and Bronze.

A few of my hobbies outside of gym include playing with my dog, hanging out with my friends, marching band, and reading! I play flute for the High School band. Something personal about me is that I am a Type 1 Diabetic. I would like to be a Veterinarian or a Nurse when I graduate.

Coach Bri

Hello, I'm Bri York! I'm an athlete and gymnast at Small Wonders Gymnastics. I've been doing gymnastics with this gym since 2016, and I've been coaching since 2022. Outside of the gym, I am a highschool Senior and an active member of National Honors Society. NHS is the Nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding highschool students. NHS serves to honor students that have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. I try to honor these values in my daily life. This includes my time at the gym.

If you have previous experience with the gym, you might already know me. As one of the older gymnasts in the gym, I believe in being a positive role model and a respectful representation of Small Wonders. I'm positive the other coaches would agree that we aren't perfect, but we strive to create an educational, caring, and safe environment for young athletes. I absolutely love this job, and look forward to creating more memories at the gym!

Coach Jordanne

Hi, I'm Jordanne! I began coaching recreational gymnastics in 2022, and I recently started coaching toddlers through PreTeam. I was a gymnast at Small Wonders for 7 years, competing from Xcel Bronze through Level 6. I'm currently a Junior in highschool, and have been homeschooled since 5th grade.

I will be graduating a year early, and plan to attend Ball State next year to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. I love working with children, so my dream is to become a Pediatric Nurse. That is also one of the main reasons I enjoy coaching. I love being around kids, making them smile, and helping them gain confidence in gymnastics and in themselves!

Coach Kherrington

Hello! My name is Kherington Shelton, and I started coaching at Small Wonders Gymnastics in 2023. I currently help coach the toddler classes and help wherever I am needed in the rec gym, and I absolutely love it! I have enjoyed getting to know all the kids, and I am excited to continue to watch them grow and learn new skills.

I attend school in New Castle, and I am actively involved in the school and our community. In my spare time, you can usually find me on a softball diamond, at cheer, or at tumbling. Sports have always been a huge part of my life. When I get older and would like to be a sports therapist. I love working for Small Wonders, and I am excited to see what the future holds for me and to continue to help the gymnast grow!

My husband Cory and I will have been married for 20 years this year and have two daughter's, Chloe and Alana. In our free time we love to do anything as a family including going to Pacers games, Colts games and family days.

While I didn't start or compete gymnastics young like Alana has, I did compete on the high school gymnastics team for New Castle.  Uneven Bars was my favorite event.

In an office or professional setting I have worked in housing for the last 16 years.  Most recently I have worked in HUD housing for individuals 62 and older or mobility impaired for the last 10 1/2 years and have been the Senior Housing Supervisor for all 18 properties for the last 5 years.  I hold National Housing Management Certications in Certified Occupancy Specialist, Certified Financial Specialist, Management Occupancy Review Specialist, Enterprise Income Verification Review Specialist, and HOTMA Compliance.

For Small Wonders, you'll see me behind the Front Desk on Mondays and Wednesdays, and I handle the posts on Social Media.  I love getting to see all of the achievements and milestones hit by each of the athletes!  Their hard work and dedication is unmatched!
